Cooking classes at the Olallieberry Inn

September 29th, 2008

We had our first cooking class for the fall on September 22 and it was a smashing success.  Marjorie demonstrated focaccia bread.

Here’s a review of the class:The cooking classes at the Olalliebrry  Inn gave me insights that I could not have gotten any other way. Watching the process taught me the importance of preparatiion,,critical timing, and other tips you don’t get from a recipe.  I especially enjoyed the warm, charming atmosphere of the Olallieberry  Inn. Looking forward to more classes!

TOUR THE LIGHTHOUSE

September 3rd, 2008

Traveling north on Highway One, six miles north of San Simeon, you will discover our historic Piedras Blancas Lighthouse.  Meaning “white rocks”, Piedras Blancas hovers majestically over the point and is in the process of being lovingly restored. Also being restored are the fog signal building, the fuel oil housing and the original Victorian lightkeeper’s home.

Construction began on the lighthouse in 1874 with the first Fresnel lens installed in 1875. Originally 110 feet in height, the lighthouse was damaged in a 1949 earthquake, leaving the tower a tad shorter at 74 feet.  You can still see the light housing on display on Main St. in Cambria.

Tours of the Lighthouse are offered midweek on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:45am. Guests are asked to meet at the former Piedras Blancas Motel, 1 ½ miles north of the light station.  Admission is free but a donation is requested.

Weekend tours are offered on the third Saturday of each month, 10am and 1pm, and feature guides dressed in Victorian costumes.  Reservations are required and admission is $15 for adults over 16.  Children under 16 are free.  Guests are asked to meet at Hearst Castle.
